This is the time of the year when I exclaim, “Happy New Year!” as we start afresh. As the year unfolds, members of our community (Board Trustees, faculty, and staff) and I will be sharing in this space the many ways we are working to strive for academic excellence and good citizenship. For now, I am pleased to share with you two changes that are underway regarding community service and student council.
Under the leadership of Chelsey Watkins, Grade 2 teacher, Gillispie will pursue a major theme for the year that will serve as the focal point for our community service efforts. In addition to an all-school service drive, each class in Prekindergarten through Grade 6 will work towards completing a project that will correspond to this theme. For 2013-14 our efforts will be directed on homelessness. Soon you will receive information on a school-wide project that will involve collecting school materials for San Diego’s Monarch School, which serves Kindergarten through Grade 12 students impacted by homelessness.
And with guidance from Heidi Long, Grade 5 teacher, Student Council will undergo a big change this year! To focus on fostering school spirit, it is now the Spirit Club. This is a club open to all students in grades 3-6 that will meet on F days in Room 16 from 3:00-3:30 p.m. Students will lead on four major events this year: the Halloween carnival, our school-wide spirit days, a spring talent show, and an end-of-year student/faculty kickball game. Students may commit to planning these Spirit Club events for one or more quarters.
Get ready for a year full of Gecko community spirit!
