Specialty Spotlight: Library

I am thrilled to be back in the Library for the start of this school year!

Early Childhood students have begun their regular storytime visits. We sing and sign together, and the students enjoy hearing picture books and big books every time they visit the library. EC library lessons focus on stories with a musical connection, a social-emotional component, a hands-on activity, or a connection to a relevant theme.

Elementary students began the year with library orientation activities, and all students have begun browsing and checking out books. Lower elementary students focused on book care and navigating the library space. Each class has also begun a picture book study: Kindergarten classes focus on author/illustrator Christian Robinson; first graders study author/illustrator Oge Mora; and second graders study celebrated children’s author Jacqueline Woodson.

Upper elementary students played an online quiz game to refresh their memories about library routines and procedures. They also scanned QR codes with their iPads on a tour of the Library to learn how it is organized and give their input on books and topics they would like to see added to our collection. Upper elementary classes each have a novel they will hear and discuss each time they visit the library, in addition to their independent reading and browsing time.

Open Library times before and after school and during snack and lunch recesses are a popular option for students to spend some time enjoying a book or just quickly pop in to return one book and check out another.

If you’d like to explore our collection, check out our online library catalog here; you can also find this link under the Current Parents tab on the Gillispie School website. Happy reading!
