Parent Survey Results

May 31, 2012

As summer nears, it’s time to reflect upon Gillispie’s progress this year and so I’m pleased to share with you key findings from the 2011-2012 parent survey.

Some notable strengths, according our 76 respondents, include:

Communication is strong at Gillispie. Teachers are perceived as accessible (94%) and reponsive (89%) to parents, while administrators, too, are accessible and responsive (over 96% on both counts).

Families feel that Gillispie, as a nurturing learning community, promotes enthusiasm for learning (96%), is a safe environment (94%), and that the School has a culture of “kindness, respect, and individual commitment to the larger world” (93%). Gillispie also promotes respect for people of diverse backgrounds (92%) and develops character (94%).

Opportunities for improvement include:

Satisfaction with how well the academic program addresses a child’s strengths and capabilities slightly increased (86%), and parents continue to encourage the School to work on differentiation (14%), especially in math. Parents’ narrative comments noted that students have come home excited about the new ST Math program, which served as one key way to meet the varying needs of math learners this year.

In addition, parents noted that the website could be improved (78% satisfaction rate)–suggestions included adding next year’s calendar dates for advance planning (this already has been implemented here; thank you for this suggestion).

Some noteworthy changes (those of approximately 10% or more) from last year to this year include:

Satisfaction rose with the Hot Lunch offerings (87%, up from 77%), and 57% of respondents favor the adoption of school uniforms (up 7% from two years ago when we last asked about it).

At the heart of the matter, 97% of those responding feel positive about the School’s direction (up from 86% last year) and overall satisfaction rose from 90% to 97%.

Thank you to everyone who weighed in during this year’s survey–we’re already planning for next year based on the many helpful narrative comments from the survey and other lessons learned.
