“No Place for Hate” Initiative at Gillispie

Dear Gillispie Families,
Happy New Year! I am thrilled to start the year with exciting news that aligns with our ICARE values for all students at Gillispie.

This semester and throughout 2024, I will be coordinating the launch of the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL’s) “No Place for Hate” initiative at Gillispie! This program is designed to emphasize the active role our students play in shaping a positive and inclusive school culture.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s in store:

  • Student-Led Committee: We believe in empowering students, and our 4th-6th graders will have the opportunity to express interest in being members of our No Place for Hate Committee. This committee aims to provide a platform for students to help others feel welcome and included at school through peer-to-peer education. The committee will consist of around 10 to 20 students. Families will be notified of their child’s interest, and will have the opportunity to approve participation.
  • Engaging Activities: The committee will plan and execute three school-wide events throughout the year that promote respect and inclusivity for diverse backgrounds and identities. Guided by students and supported by adults, these activities will be age-appropriate and designed to include all ages at Gillispie to promote active learning and discussion.

Our first event will be a school-wide “No Place for Hate” pledge. The committee will get creative in implementing a day for Gillispie students, faculty, and even family members to sign the pledge that promises to treat others fairly, be upstanders, and help others feel safe at school. Stay tuned for the date of this exciting event!

  • Recognition and Celebration: Schools that successfully complete the program by holding three events in a year receive the official “No Place for Hate” designation, celebrating our commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere.

We look forward to your support and involvement in this incredible initiative. Let’s make Gillispie a “No Place for Hate” community together!

Kindly,

Sara Johnston
