Let Our Love Flow – Gillispie School’s Annual Blood Drive

Gillispie School Annual Blood Drive

We are thrilled to announce that Gillispie School will host its 15th annual blood drive on Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at our school! This service-learning tradition holds a special place in our hearts.

Sixteen years ago, Gillispie welcomed a pair of siblings into the third-grade program. Tragically, one of them experienced a sudden relapse of the cancer she had bravely battled as a kindergartener. Her treatments were intense, and her prognosis was uncertain. Seeking a way to support the family, our school community rallied together and hosted its first-ever blood and bone marrow drive in the family's honor. Miraculously, a bone marrow transplant from her brother cured her cancer, and today, the family is thriving.

Inspired by their story, we turned that one-time event into an annual tradition. Over the years, Gillispie School has collected more than 500 pints of blood, added many people to the national bone marrow registry, and donated over $20,000 to the San Diego Blood Bank.

This year, our third graders are embracing the project with enthusiasm. They will design posters to promote the blood drive, record a public service announcement, and create custom pop-up thank you cards for donors using the laser cutter in Design class!
