Gillispie to Adopt K-6 School Uniforms for 2014-15

As we plan ahead for the 2014-2015 school year, I am excited to announce that The Gillispie School will have a uniform for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. This decision is based on parent, faculty, and limited student discussions, parent surveys results, experience with the current dress code, and observations on campus.

The most compelling reasons for this decision are threefold. First, it will simplify getting ready for school in the morning; second, once students arrive on campus, there will be less emphasis on what they are wearing; and third, there will be fewer distractions to work and play.

So that our efforts are unified, families will purchase clothing through one vendor, Lands’ End.  Details will be provided in a February mailing, but as currently planned, boys may wear tan or navy shorts or pants, while girls can also choose skorts or a jumper. Collared shirts will come in a variety of color options. Alternatively, students may wear any Gillispie t-shirt that has been designed by the School. Footwear will include sneakers or solid colored shoes with good treads and no heels. A small committee headed by Jessica Yeagle will put the finishing touches on the uniform selections.

On a designated Friday of each month, children will have either a free dress day or a dress-theme day as decided by Gillispie’s Spirit Club.

We believe that having uniforms for our elementary students will relieve the ambiguity of a dress code (i.e. “Is this okay to wear?”) and put the proper perspective and priority on preparing for a day of learning.
