Exceptional moments occur in any given school year. Sometimes they are big, hairy, scary moments, and other times they are exquisitely meaningful and wonderful. Working through the ever-evolving pandemic conditions in 2020-2021 would be an example of the former. And, conversely, what happened at the recent Talent Show in the Gillispie Sandbox’s MPR would fit into the latter category.
We witnessed magical moments as pianists, string musicians, jugglers, singers, gymnasts, and magicians (to name a few) took to the stage. Some of these students learned brand new skills, challenging themselves to perform, for the very first time, in front of a live audience, while other performers demonstrated skills that have been honed through their long-standing commitment. All of these entries took courage.
Interestingly, it was also the audience that impressed and showed me what it means to support one another. I quote from notes written by two parents who were also inspired by the ambiance created when we value and care for one another.
“All of the students, from the performers to the audience members, were incredible. Their genuine support of each other is a true testament to the Gillispie Values. We are very proud to be welcomed into the Gillispie family and are grateful for the love, care and support [our child] is shown by all of the faculty and administration.”
“Today we were fortunate enough to experience some of what makes Gillispie so special. Though it was great to see the wonderful performances and unique talents, what was really magical was what happened off the stage. The kids listened, cheered and celebrated their peers, making them feel supported and loved. The smiles the performers wore when they walked off stage and were enveloped by their friends was everything we could hope for.”
This is what it means to be part of a community.
Sincerely,
Alison Fleming, Head of School
