This week and next, Grade 4 students are exploring a walk-on map of South America obtained through the National Geographic Giant Traveling Maps program. The map, which covers half the gym floor, includes both physical and political features of the continent. Seen here, students from both Grade 4 classrooms collaborate on an open-ended scavenger hunt–they were asked to explore the map and list everything they noticed. Some of their findings include: I see the equator, the map shows elevations, the airports are marked, I see the compass rose, the largest lake in the continent is in Peru, Cape Horn is the southernmost spot, and Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina all have marsh land.
