Gillispie “Gem” of the Week

Following an emergent curriculum approach in Gillispie’s early childhood program allows for events like this year’s 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic to percolate from popular culture into the homes of our students and then into the classroom.

Prekindergarten Room 5 has been very interested in the story of the Titanic. A classroom-wide provocation occurred when Maxfield P. began building the Titanic out of LEGOs and blocks (pictured above). Many of children then began building the Titanic out of a variety of materials available to them. They then made lifeboats out of boxes, chilled icebergs for the sensory table, wrote stories for their journals (pictured above and a sample story below), and read several Titanic stories. The children even had a chance to view on Gillispie iPads a video of Titanic being built.
