Grade 4 students recently went on a field trip led by Ms. Walters to The Stuart Collection at the University of California, San Diego.
The Stuart Collection is a unique collection of works of art on the University’s campus by some of the leading artists of our time. Some of the pieces the students viewed included “Bear,” by Tim Hawkinson, Richard Fleischner’s “La Jolla Project,” and the “Snake Path,” by Alexis Smith.
One of their favorite pieces was Do Ho Suh’s “Fallen Star,” a small “home” that seems as though it’s been picked up by some mysterious force and dropped onto the seventh floor of Jacobs Hall at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Entering the unusual, tilted structure made the students feel rather off-kilter.
This art experience opened up for the students the power and many possibilities of making art.
