As an extension of their studies on California history, Gillispie’s fourth graders recently embarked on an enriching field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano. This visit brought to life the lessons they’ve been exploring in class, offering students a meaningful connection to the past through firsthand experiences.

With the help of informative audio guides, students toured the historic site while learning about the ACJACHEMEN Native American tribe, the original inhabitants of the area, and how their lives were connected to the land long before the mission was founded.

One of the highlights of the day was an interactive activity where students created animal footprints, offering a glimpse into how animals were essential to daily survival in the mission era. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of the resourcefulness and resilience of early Californians.

Through exploration, storytelling, and tactile learning, this field trip provided students with a vivid, immersive experience that enhanced their knowledge of California’s mission history.
