The Gillispie Library offers something for every student, and we strive to provide children with joyful and educational experiences with books.
Recently, early childhood classes listened to the children’s literature classic Strega Nona by Tomie de Paola. Students repeated rhyming verses from the story and acted out blowing three kisses to make the magic pot stop bubbling!
Lower elementary classes recently read Jumper, a new nonfiction picture book by Jessica Lanan. This book has gorgeous illustrations and fascinating facts about jumping spiders. We learned that jumping spiders can jump five times the length of their bodies. To illustrate this ability, I had five students lie down in a row, and classmates jumped to see how close they could get to the spider’s feat! Jumper is one of the titles that will be featured in our upcoming “Book Madness” tournament.
Upper elementary students were also introduced to books competing in “Book Madness.” They watched a book trailer for The Eyes and the Impossible, a new illustrated novel by Dave Eggers, named one of the best books of last year by organizations such as NPR, Publishers Weekly, and the New York Public Library.
The Open Library remains a popular option for students before school, during recess, and after school. Elementary students enjoy reading together with friends, using arts and crafts supplies to make bookmarks, working on homework, or simply spending time in a cozy space when the weather gets chilly.
Happy New Year, and happy reading!
