Our Grade 6 students are taking Shakespeare to the next level this spring—by adapting and performing their own play. They are choosing a tragedy or a comedy, showcasing their understanding of storytelling.
To spark inspiration, students recently went on a field trip to see The Churlish Chidings of Winter at Junior Theatre in Balboa Park. This unique production, written and performed by the actors themselves, was a clever blend of five of Shakespeare’s pastoral plays, including As You Like It, A Midsummer Night's Dream, King Lear, and more. The performance showed our students how Shakespeare's plays can be adapted and reimagined.
The day included lunch at the beautifully renovated Botanical Garden, followed by some fun on the Nikkigator—a sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle.
Since their classroom studies also include ancient Egypt, the students ended the day with a visit to the Museum of Us, where they explored the mysteries of ancient Egypt through a scavenger hunt. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and memorable experiences.
Enriching field trips like these extend learning beyond the classroom. By experiencing live theater, engaging with art, and uncovering history, our students are deepening their understanding of literature and culture in meaningful ways. We can’t wait to see how their own Shakespearean adaptation takes shape this spring.
