Specialty Spotlight: Music

This month, students are studying musicians of Latin American or Hispanic heritage for Latin American Heritage Month. Being a Costa Rican-American, this month is particularly special to our Music Teacher Mr. Lewis. Students are learning about Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Selena Quintanilla, and Carlos Santana, to name a few.

Did you know that music has many benefits to the brain and to the education of the whole child? Here is what research from National Association for Music Education 2021 says:

“Self-Management: Success in music depends on exercising perseverance, as evidenced by the ability to self-monitor one’s progress and delay gratification in the pursuit of mastery. Regular and sustained practice leads to increased abilities in performance skills and self-evaluation. These become impetus for further practice.”

In the photo above, students are playing a song called, “Feel the Beat.”
