Applying ICARE to our Digital Citizenship Practices

Gillispie students in Grades 1-5 have spent the past two weeks of school revisiting the Gillispie ICARE Values as they apply to our digital citizenship practices. During our digital citizenship lessons, students review each of the ICARE letters, and the value they represent:

  • I = Integrity
  • C = Compassion
  • A = Attitude
  • R = Respect
  • E = Effort

For example, in considering their use of iPads for school, students in 1st Grade interpret the “I” for Integrity to mean going to the app their teacher has instructed them to use. By Grade 5, the students are interpreting their own experiences and understanding of each value and then presenting their work to the class. In contrast, the 5th Grade students found that the letter “I” for Integrity means to be responsible for yourself when you are online and to only use those apps that your teacher has allowed you to use.

Grounding our digital citizenship practices in our Gillispie ICARE Values is a great way to help students develop consistent practices for being safe when they are using technology and going online. The more you can help reinforce these ideas with your children at home, the easier it will be for them to continue their digital citizenship practices.
